Final Declaration of the Green Party of Iran Following the Two-Day Nationwide Conference
February 15, 2026A New Path Toward a Healthy Environment and Sustainable Development Through a Democratic Federal Republic
Iranian society is not only currently trapped in a deadlock, but is also facing a comprehensive historical and cultural catastrophe. After nearly five decades of the Islamic Republic’s rule over the lives and property of the people of Iran, the regime responded to society’s most basic demands, people’s cries of hunger, access to drinking water, and breathable air, with bloodshed and crime.
The freedom-seeking movement of the people of Iran has passed through many ups and downs over the years. Most recently, the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, which emerged following the state killing of Jina Mahsa Amini, evolved into a discourse centered on human dignity, gender equality, quality of healthy living, workers’ and laborers’ rights, and the right to self-determination. Within this ideal framework and the understanding of “Woman, Life, Freedom,” the environment and ecological resources are recognized as the foundation of human and social life and progress, and the right to “life” becomes directly linked to the right to a healthy nature. Research and historical experience across the world show that gender justice, democracy, civic participation, and decentralization through a federal system can contribute to sustainable governance, effective protection of natural resources, and strengthened dialogue and understanding among cultures. Therefore, the continuation of such a movement can be analyzed through the interconnectedness of equality, democracy, social justice, and environmental protection and sustainability in a country like Iran, rich in valuable ecological resources.
Nevertheless, despite all the sacrifices made by freedom lovers over the past four decades, in the absence of a suitable alternative to confront these critical conditions, opportunistic charlatans with deafening megaphones present themselves as saviors. A segment of the people, whose only wish is to escape this terrifying nightmare, stand mourning and bewildered, surrounded by the voices of opportunists who have exploited both domestic and international circumstances about Iran.
On the occasion of its 27th anniversary, following two days of debate and discussion, the Green Party of Iran emphatically declares:
-
The brutal massacre carried out by Khamenei’s regime, which in just a few days resulted in the mass killing of thousands of Iranian citizens, constitutes a crime against humanity and must be registered in international courts. The leaders of the Iranian regime and the perpetrators of this horrific crime must be prosecuted.
-
The bankrupt regime is in complete political, economic, and cultural deadlock and offers no solutions to any of the social problems facing the people of Iran.
-
Dictatorship and fascism have no place in Iran’s future. The people of Iran must move beyond the false choice between religious dictatorship and monarchical dictatorship and, for the first time in their history, live an institutionalized democracy.
-
Despite the failure of the traditional pro-democracy opposition to present a viable alternative to the regime, networks of political, professional, and trade union institutions emerged during the darkest period of Iran’s history. These networks have managed to withstand the ruling religious fascism, grow, and will play a backbone role in the transitional period after the regime’s overthrow. Together with all nationalities (ethnic minorities) living in Iran, these democratic institutions represent hope against the dominance of other forms of fascism in the country’s future.
-
The Green Party of Iran, founded in 1999 and the first political force in Iran to present a comprehensive program and platform for environmental protection and socio-political ecology for holistic and sustainable development, and which introduced a generation of youth and environmental activists to political ecology for sustainable development, shares responsibility, alongside other traditional pro-democracy opposition forces, for the current failure to offer an inclusive alternative. In this period, the far right, with the support of the far-right faction of a foreign country and by exploiting powerful megaphones and television networks affiliated with Arab states, has managed to present itself as a solution to society’s deadlock and problems. In reality, this fabricated solution is nothing more than an obstacle to bypass the current regime.
-
The nationwide conference of the Green Party of Iran, with deep appreciation for the efforts of the founding members in establishing, presenting, and advancing political ecology in Iran, agreed that the time has come for the younger generation to take the helm of the party’s leadership. The new leadership will continue to benefit from the counsel of the founding members and, relying on the energy of youth and the latest achievements in technology and environmental science, will advance more powerfully the path that began 27 years ago.
-
The nationwide conference concluded that the party will align its activities exclusively with environmental NGOs, the women’s movement, the movement for justice and the release of political prisoners, university students, labor and workers’ organizations, networks and associations of teachers and students, and all those who are connected to the progressive “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement, the outcome of more than four decades of struggle by the people of Iran, and will prepare itself for all possible scenarios ahead on this path.
