Less than Two Million Women Employed in Iran
Semnan, Iran, June 6, 2000 (IRNA) -- Director General of the Labor Ministry's women employment affairs Zohre Beigum-ojaqi said here Tuesday that out of 14 million people working in the country, 1.764 million are women.
She told reporters that the figure represents only about 12 percent of the population of women in Iran.
She added, ''721,000 people enter the employment market annually, out of which women's share is 152,000, indicating that more attention has to be paid on the issue of women employment.''
The official said that currently women unemployment is 13.4 percent, adding, women need more and better vocational training which can facilitate their absorption in the job market.
Because women lack the necessary skills, the majority are employed in the service sector, followed by the industry and agriculture sectors, she said.
