Thousands of Fish Perish Away Due to Water Pollution
TEHRAN, Iran, July 1999 (IRNA)-- Water pollution of the Godar River in Naghadeh, West Azarbaijan Province, resulted in the death of thousands of fish.
Speaking to IRNA, deputy head of the Naqadeh Health Department Dr. Eskandarzadeh said that following the death of the fish, hundreds of Naqadeh citizens rushed to the river to collect the dead fish. Following warnings by environmental experts, the people stopped collecting the fish, he said. "The Health Department has warned the local people of the dangers of the consumption of the dead fish," the deputy explained. Presently the reasons behind the pollution and ways to clear it are being studied by the local municipality officials.
