Pollution reaches 'danger' level in Tehran

TEHRAN, Iran, December 18, 1999 (IRNA) -- The intensity of the two pollutants, carbon monoxide and suspended particles, reached the 'danger' level in tehran Saturday morning while other pollutants increased considerably.

The weather bureau had earlier warned in its announcements that pollution in Tehran will be intensified in coming days due to stagnant air.

The polluted stagnant air will remain unchanged at least by Sunday morning, a weather bureau forecast said.

Residents in Tehran are recommended not to travel in the city in their personal cars and are advised to take public transportation instead.

Over two million old vehicles which consume fuel more than the standard are the main cause of about 80 percent of air pollution in Tehran.

Elementary and guidance schools were recently closed due to air pollution in Tehran which reached the danger level.
