Air pollution at alarming level in Tehran

TEHRAN, Iran, December 18, 1999 (IRNA) -- The Coordination Committee in charge of emergency warning for air pollution in metropolis Tehran announced on Saturday that the air pollution in Tehran was at an alarming level.

Issuing a communique, the committee said the continued inversion phenomenon in Tehran will last until the end of the current week and will create air pollution due to absence of wind.

The committee called on the citizens to stop any direct or indirect actions which may result in increasing air pollution in the city. The committee has also called on the people not to use cars producing fumes.

Those suffering heart and pulmonary disease, aged people, children, school boys and girls have been requested to stay at home.

The committee has also advised people to use masks, to wet handkechief before their noses and to have more drinks.
