Iran shuts schools in capital because of smog

TEHRAN, Iran, December 9, 1999 (Reuters) Iran has decided to close all kindergartens and primary schools in Tehran today because of heavy smog, state television reported.

It said authorities also imposed restrictions on private cars in the centre of the capital city of 10 million people and said 500 extra buses would be laid on.

Vehicles are the main source of air pollution in Tehran, located in a valley at the foot of the Alborz Mountains, with little wind throughout the year.
