The media has reported that all Iranian VPNs have been shut down by the government and most gmail and yahoo email accounts have become inaccessible.
The US State Department had allocated two million dollarsfor a much publicized project to provide internet and mobile access for people under dictatorships, notably Iranians.
However, after two years, there is no sign of such technology or any update on the progress of the “internet suitcase project” promised by the State Department.
Have the ongoing nuclear negotiations and the US administration’s hope that the Iranian regime would compromise, pushed the State Department to shelve this project? Or, was there never a serious project in the first place and the initial announcement was merely a PR campaign to mask the US failure to support the Iranian uprising in 2009-2010?
